We're testing the most exciting MTB disc brakes on the market for ENDURO issue #070 โ on the trail and in the lab. But we need your input. Tell us what really matters in a brake and help shape our big group test.
Maximum stopping power, perfect modulation, complete control. Sounds like the dream MTB brake, right? But here's the thing โ which disc brake actually delivers when you're barreling down a rocky chute at 25 mph? And does dropping $400 really get you a better brake than a solid $180 setup?
We're about to find out. And honestly, we can't do it without you.
### We're Putting the Biggest Brakes to the Test
For the upcoming ENDURO issue #070, we're rounding up the most exciting MTB disc brakes on the market. Not just the shiny flagship models, either โ we're looking at the full spectrum, from budget-friendly options to the premium stuff that costs more than some people's first car.
But trail testing alone won't cut it. We're also taking these brakes into the lab. Heat cycling, lever force measurements, fade resistance under repeated hard stops โ the whole nine yards. Because a brake that feels great on a 30-second descent might completely fall apart on a 3-mile alpine plunge.
### Power Is Only Half the Story
Here's where things get interesting. Maximum stopping power alone doesn't make a great brake. Not even close.
Think about it like this: a brake with face-melting power but zero modulation is basically a light switch. On or off. No in-between. That's terrifying on loose terrain or wet roots.
So what actually matters? A few things:
- How precisely can you modulate that power through the lever stroke?
- How much finger effort does it take to haul things down from speed?
- Does performance stay consistent when things get hot on long descents?
- How does the brake feel after 20 minutes of abuse?
> "A great brake isn't the one with the most power. It's the one that gives you exactly the power you asked for, every single time."
That's the standard we're testing against.
### Can the Champion Hold the Crown?
We ran a big brake group test before, and we crowned a winner. Now the question is simple: can that brake defend its title? Or has the competition caught up and raised the bar?
The industry moves fast. New four-piston calipers, redesigned lever geometry, fancy heat-dissipating rotor designs โ there's no shortage of innovation hitting the market. Some of it's genuinely brilliant. Some of it's marketing fluff.
Our lab and trail testing will separate the two.
### Now It's Your Turn
This is where you come in. Lab numbers and test-rider feedback only tell part of the story. What we really want to know is what matters to you when you're actually out on the trail.
Which brakes have impressed you? Which ones left you white-knuckling the bars and praying? What does a brake need to deliver before you'd call it the best on the market?
By taking part in our survey, you'll help bring the MTB community's real-world perspective into our group test. Because at the end of the day, a brake is only as good as the riders who trust it.
So tell us what you think. Your input shapes the test, and the results land in ENDURO issue #070.
Thanks for your support โ and we'll see you on the trail.
