The Best MTB Disc Brake Isn't Obvious โ€” Here's How We'll Find It

We're testing the most exciting MTB disc brakes on the market for ENDURO issue #070 โ€” and we need your input. Tell us what really matters when you're braking hard on the trail.

Maximum stopping power. Perfect modulation. Complete control. Sounds like the ideal MTB brake, right? But which disc brake actually delivers when you're two miles into a steep, chattery descent and your fingers are starting to cramp? That's the question we keep coming back to. And honestly, we don't want to answer it alone. We're putting the most exciting mountain bike disc brakes on the market through a full group test for the upcoming ENDURO issue #070. But before we do, we need your help. Tell us what actually matters to you when you're grabbing a handful of brake on the trail. ### Power Is Easy. Control Is Hard. Here's the thing about brakes: raw stopping power is the easy part. Almost any modern disc brake can lock up a wheel if you squeeze hard enough. The real test is everything that comes after that. - How precisely can you modulate that power on a loose, off-camber corner? - How much finger effort does the lever actually require on a long, arm-pumping run? - And how consistent is the performance when things really heat up โ€” say, a 2,000-foot descent in 90-degree heat? Those are the questions that separate a good brake from a great one. A brake that feels amazing in the parking lot can turn into a mushy, unpredictable mess once the rotor hits 400ยฐF and the pads start to fade. ### Into the Lab, Not Just the Trails We're not just riding these brakes and calling it a day. As part of this group test, we're taking them into the test lab to measure what our hands and guts can't always feel. That means real data on heat management, lever feel under load, and consistency over repeated hard stops. Trail impressions matter โ€” but numbers keep us honest. > "A brake that feels amazing in the parking lot can turn into a mushy, unpredictable mess once the rotor hits 400ยฐF." ### Can the Champion Hold the Crown? Here's the fun part. The winner of our last group test is back in the ring. Can it defend the title? Or has the competition caught up and raised the bar while everyone else was napping? We'll find out in issue #070. But the outcome depends, at least in part, on what you tell us. ### Your Turn โ€” Help Shape the Test This is where you come in. We don't want this to be a lab report with no soul. We want the MTB community's perspective baked into the results. So tell us: - Which MTB brakes have genuinely impressed you out on the trail? - What matters most โ€” raw power, lever feel, consistency, or something else entirely? - What does a brake actually need to deliver to earn the title of best on the market? Whether you're a weekend trail rider or a full-time enduro racer, your opinion carries weight. A brake that works for a 150-pound cross-country rider might feel totally different to a 220-pound rider smashing through rock gardens at speed. We want to hear from all of you. Take part in our survey and help us bring the community's voice into the group test. Beyond lab results and our own testing experience, we want to know what really matters to you when the trail gets steep and the speed picks up. Thanks for your support. See you out there. โ€” Your ENDURO test crew
