The Best MTB Disc Brake Isn't What You Think โ€” Help Us Prove It

Which MTB disc brake really delivers on the trail? We're putting the market's best brakes through trail and lab testing in ENDURO issue #070 โ€” and we need your input to shape the group test.

Maximum stopping power, perfect modulation, complete control. Sounds like the ideal mountain bike brake, right? But which disc brake actually delivers when you're flying down a rocky chute with your weight over the rear tire? And does spending more money really get you better performance? That's what we're about to find out โ€” and we need your help. For the upcoming ENDURO issue #070, we're putting the most exciting MTB disc brakes on the market through their paces. But this isn't just our test. We want you to take part in our survey and help shape the big group test by telling us what really matters to you when it comes to braking performance. ### Maximum Power or Maximum Control? Why Not Both Here's the thing about brakes. Raw stopping power alone doesn't make a great brake. Think about it โ€” a brake that grabs hard but gives you zero feel is basically a light switch. You want a dimmer. So we're asking the questions that actually matter on the trail: - How precisely can you modulate that power when the trail gets loose? - How much finger effort does the lever require after an hour of hard riding? - How consistent is performance when things really heat up on long, steep descents? - Does the lever feel stay the same from the first run to the tenth? To answer these, we're not just riding the brakes on the trails. As part of this group test, we're also taking them into the test lab. Real-world trail time plus hard data โ€” that's how you separate marketing claims from genuine performance. ### Who Will Take the Win? Can the winner of our last group test defend their title? Or has the competition stepped up and raised the bar? Honestly, we don't know yet. That's the fun part. What we do know is that the gap between the best brakes on the market is smaller than ever. A few hundred dollars more doesn't automatically buy you a better brake โ€” sometimes it just buys you a fancier lever body. Our lab results and trail testing will show where the real differences live. > "A great brake isn't the one that stops hardest. It's the one you stop thinking about." โ€” the philosophy behind our test ### Now It's Your Turn Which MTB brakes have impressed you? What matters most to you โ€” bite point, lever feel, heat management, or something else entirely? And what does a brake need to deliver to earn the title of best on the market? Your opinion matters. By taking part in our survey, you'll help us bring the MTB community's perspective into our group test. Because beyond lab results and our own testing experience, we want to know what really matters to you out on the trail. So take a few minutes, share your thoughts, and help us build a test that reflects real riders โ€” not just test rigs. Thanks for your support, and we'll see you in issue #070. See you soon, Your ENDURO test crew
