The Best MTB Disc Brake Isn't Obvious โ€” And Your Vote Decides

We're putting the most exciting MTB disc brakes to the test in ENDURO issue #070 โ€” and your input shapes the results. Tell us what really matters when you're braking hard on the trail.

Maximum stopping power. Perfect modulation. Complete control. Sounds like the dream MTB brake, right? But here's the thing โ€” plenty of brakes look great on paper and then feel completely different once you're pointed down a steep, chunky descent. So which disc brake actually delivers out on the trail? And does spending more really get you better performance? We're about to find out, and honestly, we need your help. For the upcoming ENDURO issue #070, we're putting the most exciting MTB disc brakes on the market through their paces. But this isn't just our test โ€” it's yours too. Take part in our survey and tell us what really matters to you when it comes to braking performance. Your input helps shape the whole group test. ### Maximum Power or Maximum Control? Why Not Both Here's the truth: raw stopping power alone doesn't make a great brake. Anyone can make a brake that grabs hard. The real question is how precisely you can modulate that power when you need it most. Think about it on a loose, off-camber section at 25 mph. You don't want an on/off switch โ€” you want a lever that talks to your fingertips. So we're asking the questions that actually matter: - How much finger effort does the lever need on a long, steep chute? - How consistent is the performance when things really heat up on extended descents? - Does the feel stay predictable from the first run to the tenth? - How easy is it to bleed and service at home in the garage? Those last two don't always make headlines, but ask any rider who's spent a season chasing a spongy lever and they'll tell you โ€” reliability is performance. ### Into the Lab, Then Onto the Trail We're not just riding these brakes and calling it a day. As part of this group test, we're also taking them into the test lab. That means measuring what's hard to feel by hand: heat buildup, fade resistance, and consistency under load. Because a brake that feels amazing on a two-minute lap can fall apart on a 15-minute descent. We want numbers to back up the seat-of-the-pants impressions. ### Can the Last Winner Hold the Crown? Can the winner of our last group test defend their title? Or has the competition stepped up and raised the bar? That's the fun part โ€” we genuinely don't know yet. Find out in our big MTB brake group test in ENDURO issue #070. > "A brake is the one part you never think about โ€” until the moment you absolutely need it. That's exactly why we test them harder than anything else." ### Now It's Your Turn Which MTB brakes have impressed you? What matters most to you? And what does a brake need to deliver to earn the title of best on the market? Your opinion matters. By taking part in our survey, you'll help us bring the whole MTB community's perspective into this group test. Because beyond lab results and our own testing experience, we want to know what really matters to you out on the trail. So take the survey, tell us what you ride, and let's build a test that actually reflects real riders. Thanks for your support โ€” see you on the trail. Your ENDURO test crew
