We test the Black Diamond Megawatt, a 3,000-lumen helmet light built for mountain bikers. With a 50 Wh battery, wireless remote, and a runtime display, does it turn night into day?
One click of the handlebar remote, and the night is in trouble. Black Diamond is best known for climbing and mountaineering gear, but now the US brand is shining a light on mountain biking. They’re hoping to make fast trails rideable hours after the sun sets with their 3,000-lumen helmet light. Can it really turn night into day?

“If in doubt, add more power.” This philosophy has been around for a while, but it still fits the new Black Diamond Megawatt surprisingly well, for two reasons.
According to the manufacturer, the Megawatt’s six LEDs can blast up to 3,000 lumens into the darkness, while a hefty 50 Wh battery ensures the fun doesn’t end before you get to the end of the trail. On top of that, you get a wireless remote, USB-C power bank function, LCD display showing remaining runtime, various helmet mounts, plus red and SOS lights.
Black Diamond isn’t pitching the Megawatt as a conventional head torch for an evening dog walk. Instead, it’s designed for mountain biking, gravel riding, trail running, hiking, ski touring and other fast-paced outdoor activities. But how does this $330 helmet light, backed by a five-year warranty, perform on the trail and in the dark forest? Our Black Diamond Megawatt review has the answers.
### From 100 to 3,000 Lumens – And Everything In Between
Getting started is straightforward: a compact, mostly symbol-based manual walks you through charging and operation. Pairing the wireless remote is quick, too. Brightness can be adjusted across two ranges: High delivers 1,200–3,000 lumens, while Low covers 100–800 lumens. This lets you tailor the light output to the terrain, your speed and the battery runtime you need. During our review, two settings stood out: 3,000 lumens for maximum visibility and 800 lumens for more relaxed sections. The latter provides surprisingly good illumination on slower forest tracks and gravel paths, while significantly extending battery life. Pick up the pace or hit a technical trail, and you can crank up the power. The handlebar-mounted remote is more than just a nice extra: it lets you adjust the brightness without taking a hand off the bars – handy when riding conditions change or someone approaches from the opposite direction.
### Charging and Run Time
With that much light output, you need a battery to match. Black Diamond equips the Megawatt with a substantial 50.32 Wh battery. Fully charged, the LCD showed a remaining runtime of 4 hours 30 minutes at 3,000 lumens, 10 hours at 1,200 lumens, 14 hours at 800 lumens, and an impressive 31 hours 30 minutes at 100 lumens. Our review confirmed these estimates. As the battery runs low, the Megawatt automatically reduces its light output.
The precise runtime display is particularly useful: you can adjust the brightness to suit the rest of your ride, and immediately see how much extra battery life that buys you – that’s far more helpful than a few illuminated bars and hoping for the best. The state of charge did begin to fluctuate slightly once the battery was almost empty, but the estimated remaining runtime stayed surprisingly accurate. With figures like these, the Megawatt lives up to its name: chances are, the night will run out before the battery does.
If your ride takes longer than planned, simply dial down the brightness and the display instantly shows how much extra runtime you have gained. When the battery isn’t busy powering the light, it has another job: thanks to USB-C fast charging (in/out), it doubles as a power bank. You can recharge your smartphone, GPS device or other USB-C gear on the go. On longer rides, that’s more than just a nice extra – it could save you from a dead phone when you need it most.
### The Verdict
So, does the Black Diamond Megawatt turn night into day? In a word, yes. With up to 3,000 lumens and a smart, adjustable beam, it gives you the confidence to ride fast trails after dark. The precise runtime display and the convenience of the remote make it a standout choice for serious night riders. It’s not cheap at $330, but for those who ride at night regularly, it’s a worthy investment. Just remember to bring it along on your next adventure – your night rides will never be the same.
