Bosch's free Performance Upgrade 2.0 for CX and CXR Gen 5 motors gets put to the test at an Italian enduro race. We downloaded it and raced blind on six stages at Lake Garda. Here's how it performed.
Bosch just dropped a free upgrade for their CX and CXR Gen 5 motors. It's called Performance Upgrade 2.0, and anyone with a Bosch-powered e-bike can download it. So we did exactly that, then took our bike straight to Italy's Lake Garda for the Bosch eMTB Challenge at Bike Festival Riva.
We wanted to see if the new software could hold up under real race pressure. No warm-up laps, no practice runs. Just blind racing on six stages (seven for the pros) with the upgrade installed fresh.
### What's New in Performance Upgrade 2.0?
The update tweaks how the motor delivers power. It's not about more watts on paper, but how those watts feel on the trail. Bosch says the system now responds faster to pedal input, especially when you're pushing hard out of corners or climbing steep sections.
- Smoother power delivery in eMTB mode
- Better modulation in Turbo mode for technical climbs
- Reduced delay when you stomp on the pedals
We noticed the difference immediately. On the first stage, the bike felt more connected to our legs. It's like the motor finally understands what you're trying to do, instead of just dumping power when you twist the throttle.
### The Race: Blind Enduro Style
The Bosch eMTB Challenge is a true enduro format. You ride between stages on a transfer route, then race blind on each stage. No practice, no pre-riding. You get a course marshal pointing you in the right direction, and then it's all instinct.
"Blind racing forces you to trust your bike and your skills," said one of the pro riders at the event. "There's no time to second-guess."
The stages ranged from flowy singletrack to root-infested descents. Lake Garda's terrain is a mix of loose rock, hardpack, and sections that feel like they were designed by a madman. The upgrade's smoother power helped us stay composed when we hit unexpected drops or tight switchbacks.
### How the Upgrade Performed Under Pressure
We ran the bike in eMTB mode for most of the race. This mode automatically adjusts between Eco and Turbo based on your input. With the 2.0 update, the transitions felt more natural. When we needed a burst of speed to clear a rocky section, the motor responded without that jerky surge that can unsettle the bike.
On the longest stage, which dropped over 1,200 feet in less than two miles, the consistent power delivery made a big difference. We could focus on line choice instead of fighting the motor.
### Is It Worth the Download?
Absolutely. It's free, it takes about 10 minutes to install through the Bosch Flow app, and it makes a noticeable improvement. If you race enduro or just love technical trails, this update is a no-brainer.
The only catch? You need a Gen 5 CX or CXR motor. If you've got an older Bosch system, you're out of luck. But for everyone else, go grab it before your next ride.
### Final Thoughts
Racing blind in Italy with an untested software upgrade sounds like a terrible idea. But it turned out to be one of the most fun and revealing rides we've had. The Bosch Performance Upgrade 2.0 isn't a revolution, but it's a solid evolution. It makes a good e-bike feel even better, especially when the trail throws surprises at you.
If you're heading to a race or just planning a big weekend ride, download the update first. You'll thank us later.
