Bosch just dropped the Performance Upgrade 2.0 for the CX and CXR Gen 5 motors. And it's free. No strings attached.
So we did what any e-bike nut would do: we downloaded it, loaded up our bike, and headed straight to Bike Festival Riva on Lake Garda, Italy. The goal? Test every new feature and race the Bosch eMTB Challenge.
### What's New in the Performance Upgrade 2.0?
This isn't a minor tweak. Bosch added real-world improvements that change how your e-bike feels on the trail.
- **Smoother power delivery:** The motor now ramps up more naturally, especially in tight corners or technical climbs. No more abrupt surges that throw off your balance.
- **Improved battery management:** The system uses energy more efficiently, giving you a few extra miles on a single charge. In a race, that's gold.
- **Customizable assist levels:** You can fine-tune the support to match your riding style or the terrain. Need more punch on a steep climb? Dial it in. Want a workout on the flats? Drop it down.
We updated the firmware through the Bosch Flow app, and the whole process took about 10 minutes. Seriously, it's that easy.
### The Bosch eMTB Challenge: Blind Racing at Its Best
Now for the fun part. The Bosch eMTB Challenge is an e-bike enduro with six stages (seven for the pros). The twist? It's blind racing. You don't get to pre-ride the stages. You show up, get a course map, and send it.
That means you're navigating on the fly, reading the terrain, and making split-second decisions. It's a mental game as much as a physical one.
> "Blind racing forces you to trust your instincts and your bike. There's no time to overthink."
The stages were set around Lake Garda, with trails that ranged from flowy singletrack to rooty, rocky descents. And with the new upgrade, the e-bike felt more planted and predictable.
### How the Upgrade Performed Under Race Conditions
We ran the race on a full-suspension e-MTB with the CX motor. Here's what stood out:
- **Climbing:** The smoother power delivery made a huge difference on loose, steep climbs. The rear wheel stayed hooked up, and I didn't have to wrestle the bike.
- **Descending:** The motor's response felt more natural when I pedaled out of corners. It didn't jerk or lag.
- **Battery life:** I finished the six stages with 23% battery left. That's about 12 miles of mixed terrain with 1,800 feet of elevation gain. Solid.
The upgrade didn't magically make me faster, but it took away distractions. I could focus on the trail instead of fighting the bike.
### Should You Download the Upgrade?
If you have a Bosch CX or CXR Gen 5 motor, yes. It's free, it improves the ride quality, and it only takes a few minutes to install. Even if you're not racing, you'll notice the difference on your regular rides.
The Bosch eMTB Challenge is a blast, and the upgrade made the experience even better. If you get a chance to race it, don't hesitate. Just make sure your firmware is up to date first.
