DHaRCO Enduro Bib Shorts: Dual Protection Review

Bib shorts or back protector? The DHaRCO Enduro bib combines both. This review covers the integrated RHEON back protector, storage quirks, and whether it works for day rides vs. multi-day trips.

Bib shorts or back protector? What if you could have both in one piece of gear? The DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts aim to do just that. On the trail, the concept promises a high level of comfort and added protection. Let's find out how well this combination works in practice. ### What You Get for Your Money At $169.99, the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts offer serious value. That's because comparable back protectors alone often cost around $60 to $70. For your money, you get bib shorts with small storage pockets, a seat pad, and integrated CE Level 1 back protection. If you already own a back protector, DHaRCO also sells the padded shorts without the protector for $139. The RHEON back protector is available separately in two sizes for $63. There's also a women-specific version, which skips the fly opening found on the men's model. ### Materials and Build Quality The bibs are made from a nylon-elastane mesh fabric that feels breathable and stretchy. They feature a Coolmax performance seat pad, designed to keep you dry on long rides. For back protection, DHaRCO uses RHEON, an impact-reactive polymer. It stays soft and flexible during normal movement but stiffens instantly on impact. That means you get protection without feeling like you're wearing a rigid shell. You can wash the padded shorts on a gentle cycle at 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Just remember to remove the protector first and clean it by hand. ### On the Trail: Fit and Comfort After finding a quiet corner to get changed, the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts immediately impressed us with their fit. The straps, length, and overall fit feel well balanced. On the bike, the pad sits exactly where it should, and the bib stays comfortable even while pedaling. For MTB bib shorts worn under trousers, the seat pad is relatively thick. Your sit bones will appreciate that on rough descents. ### The Integrated Back Protector: A Highlight The integrated RHEON back protector is the standout feature. It sits neatly against your back and is barely noticeable while riding. In fact, it's one of the most unobtrusive back protectors we've tested. On the trail, it hardly gets in the way and combines protection with excellent comfort. Measuring 16 inches by 6.1 inches, the back protector stays compact and weighs just 0.55 pounds. ### Storage: The Good and the Annoying - The deep rear pockets keep their contents securely in place. - But on our 6-foot-3-inch tester wearing size XL, the pockets end exactly at waistband height. - That means energy bars can slip under the waistband or get uncomfortably pinched while pedaling. - There's no zippered pocket for a house key, which is a missed opportunity. The side pockets seem practical with their cargo-bib design, but under tighter MTB trousers, they're almost impossible to access while riding without pulling your trousers down. ### The Big Drawback: Not for Multi-Day Trips The bib gives you more than enough storage space. Top up your gels, and our tester still had another 75 miles to ride. But the biggest drawback lies in the concept itself. For day rides, weekends, or short trips, the integrated solution works really well. You get additional protection without needing a separate protector vest. On longer bike holidays, though, it only partially replaces a standalone back protector. You're unlikely to wear the same bib for several days in a row, so you'd still need a separate protector for those trips. ### Final Thoughts If you're looking for a versatile bib that doubles as a back protector for short to medium rides, the DHaRCO Enduro is a solid choice. It's comfortable, protective, and offers great value. Just don't expect it to replace your full protection kit on multi-day adventures.
