The DHaRCO Enduro Bib Shorts combine a comfortable bib with an integrated RHEON back protector for day rides. Read our review on fit, storage, and performance.
Bib shorts or back protector? The DHaRCO Enduro bib combines both. On the trail, this concept promises high comfort and added protection. Let's dive into how well this combo works in practice.
### What You Get for Your Money
At $169.99, the value is hard to argue with. Comparable back protectors often cost that alone. For your money, you get bib shorts with small storage pockets, a seat pad, and integrated CE Level 1 back protection. DHaRCO also offers the padded shorts without the protector for $139, leaving the insert pocket empty. The RHEON back protector is sold separately in two sizes for $59. A women-specific version exists, but unlike the men's model, it has no fly opening.
### Build and Materials
The bibs use a nylon-elastane mesh fabric with a Coolmax performance seat pad. For back protection, DHaRCO relies on RHEON, an impact-reactive polymer. It stays soft and flexible but stiffens on impact, balancing protection and comfort. Wash the shorts on a gentle cycle at 86°F. Remove the protector first and clean it by hand.
### On-Trail Performance
After suiting up in a quiet corner, the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts impress with a comfortable fit. The straps, length, and overall fit feel well balanced. On the bike, the pad sits exactly where it should, staying comfortable even while pedaling. For MTB bib shorts worn under trousers, the seat pad is relatively thick—your sit bones will thank you.
The integrated RHEON back protector is the highlight. It sits neatly against your back, barely noticeable while riding. It's one of the most unobtrusive back protectors we've tested. On the trail, it hardly gets in the way, combining protection with excellent comfort. The protector measures 15.9 x 6.1 inches and weighs just 0.55 pounds.
### Storage: A Mixed Bag
The deep rear pockets keep contents secure, but on our 6-foot-3-inch tester wearing size XL, they end exactly at waistband height. Energy bars can slip under the waistband or get pinched, which gets annoying while pedaling. There's no zippered pocket for a house key, which is a shame. The side pockets seem practical with their cargo-bib design, but under MTB trousers, they're limited. With tighter-fitting trousers, accessing the thigh pockets while riding is nearly impossible without pulling your trousers down.
- Deep rear pockets hold gear securely
- No zippered pocket for small essentials
- Side pockets hard to reach under tight trousers
### The Concept's Catch
The bib offers plenty of storage space. You can top up your gels and still have miles to ride. The biggest drawback lies in the concept itself. For day rides, weekends, or short trips, the integrated solution works really well—extra protection without a separate vest. But on longer bike holidays, it only partially replaces a standalone back protector. You're unlikely to wear the same bib for several days straight, making a separate protector more practical for multi-day adventures.
### Bottom Line
The DHaRCO Enduro Bib Shorts with RHEON back protector are a smart choice for short rides and day trips. They combine comfort and protection in one package, with good value and thoughtful design. Just be aware of the storage quirks and the limitation for longer trips. If you're after a streamlined setup for everyday trail riding, these bibs are worth a look.
