DHaRCO Enduro Bib Shorts combine a comfortable seat pad with a RHEON back protector for dual protection on the trail. Read our full review for fit, storage, and value insights.
Bib shorts or back protector? With the DHaRCO Enduro bib, you actually get both. On the trail, this combo promises serious comfort plus added safety. So how well does it really work? Let's break it down.
### The Concept: One Piece, Two Jobs
After launching their first knee pads, DHaRCO is now expanding their lineup with bib shorts that pack an integrated back protector. At first glance, it sounds like a no-brainer. Less gear to carry, fewer things to forget before heading out. But like any clever idea, it comes with trade-offs.
For $169.99, the value is hard to beat, especially since a standalone back protector often costs about the same. What you get is a pair of bib shorts with small storage pockets, a quality seat pad, and CE Level 1 back protection built right in. DHaRCO also sells the padded shorts without the protector for $139, leaving the insert pocket empty. The RHEON back protector itself is available separately in two sizes for $69. There's even a women-specific version, though it lacks the fly opening found on the men's model.
### Build and Materials: What You're Getting
The bibs are made from a nylon-elastane mesh fabric with a Coolmax performance seat pad. The back protection uses RHEON, an impact-reactive polymer that stays soft and flexible during normal riding but stiffens instantly on impact. Think of it like a smart material that knows when to be comfortable and when to save your spine.
You can wash the padded shorts on a gentle cycle at 86ยฐF, but make sure to remove the protector first and clean it by hand. Simple enough.
### On the Trail: Comfort and Fit
After finding a quiet corner to get changed, the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts immediately impress with a comfortable fit. The straps, length, and overall balance feel just right. On the bike, the pad sits exactly where it should, and the bib stays comfortable even during long pedaling sessions. For MTB bib shorts worn under trousers, the seat pad is relatively thick, which your sit bones will definitely appreciate.
### The Integrated Back Protector: A Game Changer?
The RHEON back protector is clearly the highlight here. It sits neatly against your back, is barely noticeable while riding, and ranks as one of the most unobtrusive back protectors we've tested. On the trail, it hardly gets in the way and manages to combine protection with excellent comfort surprisingly well.
Measuring about 16 inches by 6 inches, the protector stays compact and weighs just 0.55 pounds. That's light enough to forget you're wearing it, until you need it.
### Storage: Plenty of Room, But Not Perfect
The deep rear pockets keep their contents securely in place, but on our 6-foot-3-inch tester wearing size XL, they end exactly at waistband height. This means energy bars can slip under the waistband or get uncomfortably pinched, which becomes annoying while pedaling. It's also a shame there's no zippered pocket for something like a house key that you only need at the start and end of your ride.
The side pockets initially seem practical with their cargo-bib design, but in everyday trail use under MTB trousers, they're only of limited use. With tighter-fitting MTB trousers, it's almost impossible to access the thigh pockets properly while riding without pulling your trousers down or taking them off altogether.
> "Top up the gels one more time, and our tester still had another 75 miles to ride."
### The Drawback: Not for Multi-Day Adventures
The biggest limitation lies in the concept itself. For day rides, weekends, or short trips, the integrated solution works really well because it offers additional protection without needing a separate protector vest. On longer bike holidays, though, it only partially replaces a standalone back protector, since you're unlikely to wear the same bib for several days in a row. So if you're planning a multi-day epic, you might still want a dedicated protector vest for rotation.
### Final Verdict
The DHaRCO Enduro Bib Shorts are a solid choice for anyone who wants the convenience of built-in back protection without sacrificing comfort. They're not perfect, especially for longer trips, but for most riders, they offer a smart balance of safety, storage, and ride quality. Just be mindful of the pocket placement and the limited multi-day use.
