DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts with integrated RHEON back protector offer a clever combo of comfort and safety for mountain biking. Priced at $199.99, they feature a CE Level 1 protector, storage pockets, and a Coolmax seat pad. Ideal for day rides but limited for multi-day trips.
### Why Choose Bib Shorts with Built-In Back Protection?
Bib shorts or a back protector? With the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts, you get both in one package. On the trail, this combo promises serious comfort and extra safety. But does it really work? Let's find out.
The DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts come with an integrated RHEON back protector. They cost $199.99 and weigh 1.17 pounds (size XL with protector). After launching their first knee pads, DHaRCO is now expanding its lineup with these clever bib shorts. At first glance, it sounds like a smart idea: less gear to carry, fewer things to forget before heading out. But the concept isn't perfect.
### What You Get for Your Money
At $199.99, the value is hard to beat. Comparable back protectors alone often sell for a similar price. For your money, you get bib shorts with small storage pockets, a seat pad, and integrated CE Level 1 back protection. You can also buy the padded shorts without the protector for $159.99, leaving the insert pocket empty. The RHEON back protector is sold separately in two sizes for $74.99. There's a women-specific version too, but unlike the men's model, it doesn't have a fly opening.
The bibs are made from a nylon-elastane mesh fabric with a Coolmax performance seat pad. For back protection, DHaRCO uses RHEON, an impact-reactive polymer that stays soft and flexible but stiffens on impact. This aims to blend protection with comfort. You can wash the padded shorts on a gentle cycle at 86°F. Just remove the protector first and clean it by hand.

### Testing the DHaRCO Enduro Bib Shorts
After finding a quiet spot to get changed, the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts immediately impressed me with their comfortable fit. The straps, length, and overall feel are well balanced. On the bike, the pad sits exactly where it should, and the bib stays comfortable even while pedaling. For MTB bib shorts worn under trousers, the seat pad is relatively thick—your sit bones will definitely appreciate that.
The integrated RHEON back protector is the real highlight. It sits neatly against your back, is barely noticeable while riding, and is one of the most unobtrusive back protectors I've tested. On the trail, it hardly gets in the way and combines protection with excellent comfort surprisingly well.
### Storage and Practicality
Measuring 15.9 by 6.1 inches, the back protector stays compact and weighs just 0.55 pounds. The deep rear pockets keep their contents secure, but on our 6-foot-2-inch tester wearing size XL, they end exactly at waistband height. This means energy bars can slip under the waistband or get uncomfortably pinched, which becomes annoying while pedaling. It's also a shame there's no zippered pocket, say for a house key you only need at the start and end of your ride.
The side pockets initially seem practical with their cargo-bib design, but in everyday trail use under MTB trousers, they're only of limited use. With tighter-fitting MTB trousers, it's almost impossible to access the thigh pockets properly while riding without pulling your trousers down or taking them off altogether.
### The Biggest Drawback
The bib definitely gives you more than enough storage space. Top up the gels one more time, and our tester still had another 74.6 miles to ride. But the biggest drawback lies in the concept itself. For day rides, weekends, or short trips, the integrated solution works really well because it offers additional protection without needing a separate protector vest. On longer bike holidays, though, it only partially replaces a standalone back protector, since you're unlikely to wear the same bib for several days in a row.
### Final Thoughts
If you're looking for a practical, all-in-one solution for shorter rides, the DHaRCO Enduro bib shorts are a solid choice. They combine comfort, protection, and storage in a way that's hard to beat at this price. Just be aware of the limitations for extended trips.
