High-Tech Suspension Telemetry: Does It Really Make You Faster?

We spent months testing the BYB Tech Telemetry V3 Pro on the trails to see if high-tech suspension analysis really makes a difference for amateur riders.

## Professional Data Acquisition Meets Amateur Riders You've probably seen those delicate cables and tiny data boxes on World Cup race bikes. They're recording every movement of fork and shock with millisecond precision, helping riders squeeze out that last hundredth of a second. But can amateur riders also benefit from a technology that costs $3,100? We spent months testing the BYB Tech Telemetry V3 Pro system on the trails to find out. If you want to compete at the sharp end of today's Downhill, Enduro, or Cross Country World Cup, instinct alone won't cut it anymore. That's where telemetry specialists like BYB Tech come in. Based in Italy, the company was founded by former Elite Masters downhill champion and automation engineer Enrico Rodella. What started as a Kickstarter campaign in 2018 has grown into one of the leading telemetry suppliers on the World Cup circuit. Today, the company runs on just three full-time employees and one part-time team member, delivering data insights once available to only a handful of professional teams. So why go to all this effort? Aren't a good feel for the bike and the classic rubber O-ring on the fork stanchion enough anymore? BYB Tech claims their V3 Pro system turns subjective impressions into reliable data, making suspension setup both understandable and fully repeatable. But does this flood of data justify the hefty price tag? And more importantly, can you actually make sense of the analysis without a degree in aerospace engineering? ### What's Included and What Can It Measure? For the substantial price of $3,100, you get a system with an IP65 rating, which makes it resistant to dust and water spray. At its core is the central data acquisition unit, which processes data at frequencies of up to 1,000 Hz—that's 1,000 measurements per second. Here's what's in the box: - **V3 Pro data acquisition unit:** stores all measurement data and features a three-axis accelerometer and a gyroscope - **Two linear potentiometers:** measure suspension travel on the fork and shock - **Brake sensors:** detect when the brakes are applied - **External GPS receiver:** records your route and speed - **Magnetic wheel sensor:** measures wheel speed with high precision directly at the wheel - **Comprehensive mounting hardware** If you want to dive even deeper into the data, the unit can be paired via ANT+ or Bluetooth with external sensors such as heart rate monitors and power meters. Action cameras can be synchronized with the system too. Camera synchronization is a particularly powerful feature, allowing you to overlay telemetry data directly onto your video footage. This makes it possible to analyze exactly why a load spike occurred in a specific trail section—whether it was caused by a riding mistake, poor line choice, or simply an untidy landing. ### Installation: Zip Ties, Double-Sided Tape, and a Little Patience Installing the BYB Tech system for the first time calls for careful attention and a bit of mechanical confidence. If you know exactly what you're doing, fitting the system takes around 15 to 20 minutes. For first-time users, however, the process can take considerably longer. Frame designs with the shock positioned deep inside the down tube or routed through the seat tube require a more creative approach when mounting the shock sensor. On our test bikes, a Trek Fuel+ EX and a YT DECOY SN, installation was straightforward and completely trouble-free. For selected bike models, BYB provides dedicated mounting brackets as free downloadable 3D printing files, allowing you to print the required parts yourself. For most bikes, however, the supplied universal mounts are all you need. Everything is secured using cable ties and double-sided adhesive tape. ### So, Does It Really Make a Difference? After months of testing, we found that the BYB Tech Telemetry V3 Pro is a powerful tool—but it's not for everyone. For serious racers and data nerds, it offers insights that can genuinely improve suspension setup and shave seconds off your time. But for the average rider, the learning curve is steep, and the price is high. If you're the kind of rider who loves dissecting every detail of your performance, this system could be a game-changer. If you'd rather just ride by feel, you might want to stick with that O-ring.
