For years, the DH casing has been the toughest option in the MAXXIS lineup and a staple of the Downhill World Cup. But here's the thing: modern downhill bikes are faster, tracks are rougher, and tires are taking more abuse than ever. When races are decided by hundredths of a second, one flat tire can cost you more than a single race. It can cost you a title.
So what did MAXXIS change? Let's break it down.
### What's New Inside the Casing
The updated DH casing keeps the dual-ply construction that gravity riders trust, but MAXXIS made four key changes that matter. The first is a stiffer butyl insert around the tire bead. This is designed to improve stability at lower pressures and cut pinch flat risk by 28%. You can feel the difference before you even mount the tire—the bead is noticeably firmer.
Second, there's an extra sidewall protection layer. MAXXIS claims sidewall durability is up 24%, and tread puncture resistance improved by 28%. That's a meaningful jump for riders who push through rocky sections.
Third, the casing now uses two 120 TPI plies instead of the old 60 TPI fabric. Finer threads mean the tire is more supple and conforms better to terrain. Our guess is that MAXXIS used the higher thread count to offset the stiffer bead, keeping the ride compliant.
Finally, the overlap between the two plies extends further into the shoulder area. That's where cornering loads hit hardest, so it makes sense to reinforce it.

The only downside? The new colored sidewall logo might not match your aesthetic, but that's a minor quibble. What matters is that the tire performs as advertised.
We put about 50 miles of hard riding on the new casing, including a full day at a bike park with rocky descents and high-speed sections. No flats, no cuts, no issues. The old casing was already solid, but this one feels like a genuine step forward.
