We tested Muc-Off's Big Bore Hybrid tubeless valve. Machined from 7075 aluminum with a ball valve design, it promises fast inflation and easy sealant top-ups. Does it deliver?
### The Big Idea Behind the Big Bore
With the Big Bore Hybrid valve, Muc-Off is bringing a genuine upgrade for tubeless fans. Machined from 7075 aluminum, designed without a valve core, and featuring massive airflow, it promises fast, hassle-free inflation and easy sealant top-ups. We put Muc-Off's tubeless valves through an in-depth test. Do they deliver on their promise?
Muc-Off stays true to its style: bold colors, premium materials, and clever design. The Big Bore Hybrid valve is machined from CNC-milled 7075 aluminum and feels every bit as high-end as it looks. In the hand, it feels solid, precise and robust -- clearly premium class.
### Sizing and Fit for Any Build
The Muc-Off Big Bore Hybrid tubeless valves are available in four sizes to suit different rim depths: Small, Medium, Large, and XL.
- Small 30 mm, 0.32 oz
- Medium 35 mm, 0.34 oz
- Large 45 mm, 0.35 oz
- XL 60 mm, 0.36 oz
Available in six colors and four lengths, it's a strong match for almost any wheelset, both visually and technically. To ensure a perfect fit, Muc-Off includes several rubber bases which will adapt to different rim profiles. It's a small detail, but a very effective one. For our review, we mounted and tested the Muc-Off Big Bore Hybrid valve on three bikes.
### How the Ball Valve Changes the Game
The classic valve core has been replaced on the Muc-Off Big Bore Hybrid by a ball valve. The clear advantage: air can flow into the tire much faster, and without a valve core, the risk of sealant clogging things up is significantly reduced.
**Key Specs:**
- Price: $49 (approx. 45 Euros)
- Weight: 0.32 to 0.36 oz
- Valve Lengths: 1.18, 1.38, 1.77, 2.36 inches
- Valve Head: Schrader (car valve)
- Insert Compatible: yes
- Special Features: no valve core, ball valve, wide opening valve stem for sealant filling, installation tool, different sealing grommets for different rim designs
### Installation: Straightforward but With a Catch
Installation is just as straightforward as with a standard valve. It fits any rim with a Presta drill hole, but it does require a pump with a Schrader head -- something which most modern pumps already have anyway. Build quality and fit are spot on: the valve sits securely and seals properly, exactly as you'd expect from Muc-Off.
**Included in the box:** two valves, a small installation tool, a tube for topping up sealant, plus spare rubber bases and two spare O-rings for the ball-valve housing.
If you replace a standard Presta valve with the Muc-Off Big Bore Hybrid valve, you'll need a pump with a Schrader head.
### Real-World Performance
Once air comes into play, the Big Bore Hybrid valve shows what it can do: the open, straight-through internal channel delivers seriously impressive airflow, as there's no valve core to get in the way. Muc-Off claims up to 254% more airflow than with a standard Presta valve. During tubeless setup with a booster or compressor, you can feel how evenly and forcefully the air rushes in -- pop! -- and the tire snaps into place on the rim noticeably faster.
The highlight is the integrated ball valve. It has to be closed manually before removing the pump, to reliably prevent any loss of pressure. No hissing, no air loss -- tire pressure stays stable. Topping up sealant is just as easy: open the ball valve, let the air out, pour in the sealant, pump it back up -- done. Even better, if you want to know how much sealant is still inside the tire, you can check it easily with a thin stick, or Muc-Off's own dipstick (sold separately).
### Testing on Real Rides
On Erik's Roval Traverse Carbon rim, which has a 1 inch rim depth, both the Medium (1.38 inches) and Large (1.77 inches) sizes were a good fit. The DT Swiss rim on Manne's eMTB has a depth of 0.87 inches -- he used the Muc-Off valves in size Medium. Thomas is running DT Swiss G 1800 rims on his gravel bike with a rim depth of 1 inch, fitted with Muc-Off valves in size Large.
### The Verdict
If you're tired of fighting with sealant clogs or slow inflation, the Muc-Off Big Bore Hybrid valve is a solid investment. It's not just about the flashy looks -- the engineering is real. The ball valve eliminates the biggest headaches of tubeless maintenance, and the build quality is top-notch. For around $49, you get a pair of valves that will likely outlast your current wheelset. Just make sure your pump has a Schrader head, and you're good to go.
