Bikepacking is booming, but who has the time? Discover how to turn 9-to-5 into 5-to-9 with a one-night escape right from your doorstep. No vacation days needed.
Bikepacking is booming. It seems like everyone wants to go higher, further, and disappear into the wilderness for weeks. But who actually has the time? I went looking for adventure between everyday life and a packed schedule, and found it right on my doorstep.
Social media feeds are full of epic expeditions to the far side of the world. The reality? Packed schedules and too few days off dictate our lives. So instead of sitting in rush-hour traffic or collapsing on the sofa, I decided to flip the script. 9-to-5 becomes 5-to-9. At 5 pm, I close the laptop. Today's goal: a one-night escape from the daily grind. No plan, just one deadline: back in time for tomorrow's meeting.
### The Art of Minimalist Packing
Normally, I'm the type who stuffs a camper to the roof for a weekend at the bike park and still manages to be overloaded. Packing light isn't my strong suit. But this time, my cross-country bike would have to do, and I'd only take what fits on the handlebars, the frame, or my body. I packed as best I could and set off.
There isn't much room for luggage on my Lauf Elja, but it would have to be enough for one night.
### Exploring Your Own Backyard
After just a few miles, I left my usual post-work routes behind. With no pressure, I simply kept pedaling. No rush, no need to be home before dark. I drifted away from familiar trails, past wide-open fields and lush green pastures where cows grazed, bells clinking. The air smelled of freshly cut grass, and with every pedal stroke, the stress of the office fell further behind. It's amazing how unfamiliar—how full of adventure—home can feel when you simply turn left where you'd usually go right.
And we're off! Past meadows and lakes, with mountains looming behind.
Anyone can discover new places close to home if they simply turn left instead of right for a change.
### A Thousand-Star Hotel
With "improvisation is everything" as my motto, I had no plan and, of course, no dinner. As luck would have it, I rolled past a farm with a vending machine stocked with fresh local produce. Perfect! I grabbed some pepper sausages and pretzels for a first bite. But the best part was meeting the farmer himself, who had just climbed down from his tractor. We got chatting, I told him about my 5-to-9 idea, and he smiled. Without any fuss, he offered to let me spend the night in his freshly mown meadow by the edge of the woods.
Thanks to the well-stocked farm vending machine, dinner was sorted. And thanks to the friendly farmer, I had a place to sleep.
With a guaranteed spot for the night, I made the most of the remaining daylight and clocked up a few more miles. Leaving civilization behind, I headed onto quiet gravel roads and even stumbled across some singletrack trails. Until now, I'd always thought the real fun was reserved for enduro trails at the bike park, but the Lauf Elja XC bike proved otherwise, getting both the adrenaline and the grin factor up.
But the sun was slowly disappearing, and dusk cast the foothills in a cool blue glow. Time to head back to camp. Setting up was surprisingly straightforward, and before long I'd checked into my thousand-star hotel at the edge of the woods in record time. Roll out the sleeping mat, inflate it, climb into the sleeping bag. Done.
There's no Wi-Fi and barely any signal, so the urge to mindlessly scroll through updates faded quickly. Instead, I lay there listening to the sounds of the night, feeling a million miles away from the office.
### Why You Should Try a 5-to-9 Adventure
- **No vacation days needed:** You can do it any day of the week.
- **Minimal planning:** Improvise and go with the flow.
- **Local discovery:** You don't need to travel far to find adventure.
- **Stress relief:** A night outdoors can reset your mind better than a weekend on the couch.
So next time you feel the itch for adventure but think you don't have time, remember: you can always turn 9-to-5 into 5-to-9. The adventure is closer than you think.
