Bikepacking is booming, but who has the time? Discover how to swap 9-to-5 for 5-to-9 and turn your post-work hours into a mini adventure right from your doorstep.
Bikepacking is booming. It seems like everyone wants to go higher, further, and disappear into the wilderness for weeks. But who actually has the time? I went looking for adventure between everyday life and a packed calendar, and found it right on my doorstep.
Social media feeds are full of epic expeditions to the far side of the world. The reality is often different. Packed schedules and too few days off dictate our lives. So instead of sitting in rush-hour traffic or collapsing on the sofa, I decided to flip the script. 9-to-5 becomes 5-to-9. It's 5 pm, I close the laptop, and today's goal is a one-night escape from the daily grind. Beyond that, there's no plan—just one deadline: I need to be back for my meeting tomorrow morning.
### Packing Light: A Challenge
Normally, I'm the type who stuffs the camper to the roof for a weekend at the bike park and still ends up overloaded. Packing only the essentials and traveling light isn't my strong suit. This time, though, my cross-country bike would have to do, and I could only take what fit on the handlebars, the bike, or my body. I packed as best I could and headed off.
### Exploring Your Own Backyard
After just a few miles, I left my usual post-work routes behind. With no pressure, I just kept pedaling. No rush, no need to be home before dark. I drifted away from familiar trails, past wide-open fields and lush green pastures where cows grazed, bells clinking at their necks. The air smelled of freshly cut grass, and with every pedal stroke, the stress of the office fell further behind. It's amazing how unfamiliar—how full of adventure—home can feel when you simply turn left where you'd usually go right.
> "Anyone can discover new places close to home if they simply turn left instead of right for a change."
### A Thousand-Star Hotel
With "improvisation is everything" as my motto, I had no plan and, of course, no dinner. As luck would have it, I rolled past a farm with a vending machine stocked with fresh local produce. Perfect! I grabbed some pepper sausages and pretzels for a first bite. But the best part was meeting the farmer himself, who had just climbed down from his tractor. We got chatting, I told him about my 5-to-9 idea, and he smiled. Without any fuss, he offered to let me spend the night in his freshly mown meadow by the edge of the woods.
With a guaranteed place to sleep, I made the most of the remaining daylight and clocked up a few more miles. Leaving civilization behind, I headed onto quiet gravel roads and even stumbled across some singletrack trails. Until now, I'd always thought the real fun was reserved for enduro trails at the bike park, but the Lauf Elja XC bike proved otherwise, getting both the adrenaline and the grin factor up.
But the sun was slowly disappearing, and dusk cast the Alpine foothills in a cool blue glow. Time to head back to camp. Setting up was surprisingly straightforward, and before long I'd checked into my thousand-star hotel at the edge of the woods in record time. Roll out the sleeping mat, inflate it, climb into the sleeping bag. Done.
There's no Wi-Fi and barely any signal, so the urge to mindlessly scroll through endless feeds fades away. Instead, I listened to the sounds of the night and fell asleep under the stars.
