No weeks off? No problem. How one rider turned 9-to-5 into 5-to-9 with a one-night bikepacking escape in her own backyard โ dinner, camping, and all.
Bikepacking is booming. Every scroll through your feed throws another epic expedition at you โ riders disappearing into the wilderness for weeks, chasing higher passes and farther horizons. But who actually has the time for that? I went looking for adventure somewhere between a packed calendar and everyday life, and found it sitting right on my doorstep.
Social media sells the far side of the world. Reality looks a lot different for most of us. Packed schedules and too few days off run the show. So instead of sitting in rush-hour traffic or collapsing onto the couch in frustration, I decided to flip the whole thing on its head.
9-to-5 becomes 5-to-9. It's 5 pm, I close the laptop, and today's goal is a one-night escape from the daily grind. No plan beyond that. Just one deadline: I need to be back in my meeting on time tomorrow morning.
### Packing Light (Sort Of)
Normally, I'm the type who stuffs the camper to the roof for a weekend at the bike park and still shows up massively overloaded. Packing only the essentials and traveling light is genuinely not my strong suit. This time, though, my cross-country bike has to do the job, and I'm only bringing what fits on the handlebars, on the frame, or on my body. I strap it down as best I can and roll out.
There isn't much room for luggage on my Lauf Elja, but it'll have to be enough for one night.
### Exploring Your Own Backyard
After just a few miles, I leave my usual post-work routes behind. No pressure, no rush, no need to be home before dark. I drift away from the familiar trails, past wide-open fields and green pastures where cows graze, bells clinking at their necks. The air smells like freshly cut grass, and with every pedal stroke, the stress of the office falls a little further behind.
It's amazing how unfamiliar home can feel when you simply turn left where you'd usually go right. Anyone can find new places close to home with one small change in direction.
> "Improvisation is everything" became my motto for the night โ and it paid off in ways I never planned.
### A Thousand-Star Hotel
With no plan, I also have no dinner. As luck would have it, I roll past a farm with a vending machine stocked with fresh local produce. Perfect. I grab some pepper sausages and pretzels for a first bite. But the best part of the stop is meeting the farmer himself, who has just climbed down from his tractor.
We get chatting, I tell him about my 5-to-9 idea, and he smiles. Without any fuss, he offers to let me spend the night in his freshly mown meadow over by the edge of the woods. Dinner and a place to sleep, sorted in under ten minutes.
With a guaranteed spot for the night, I make the most of the remaining daylight and clock a few more miles. Leaving civilization behind, I head onto quiet gravel roads and even stumble across a few singletrack trails along the way. Until now, I figured real fun was reserved for enduro trails at the bike park, but the Lauf Elja proves otherwise โ the adrenaline and the grin factor both climb fast.
But the sun is fading, and dusk casts the foothills in a cool blue glow. Time to head back to camp. Setup is surprisingly straightforward. Roll out the sleeping mat, inflate it, climb into the sleeping bag. Done.
### The Takeaway
There's no Wi-Fi and barely any signal out here, so the urge to mindlessly scroll fades within minutes. What's left is quiet, a full stomach, and the realization that adventure doesn't require weeks off or a plane ticket.
- You don't need a big block of vacation time โ one evening can be enough.
- Pack only what fits on the bike and your body.
- Say yes to small detours and unexpected conversations.
- Set one hard deadline (like tomorrow's meeting) and let the rest stay open.
By 7 am I'm packing up, and by 9 I'm back at my desk. Nobody at work knows I slept under the stars. But I do โ and that changes the whole week.
