Swap Your 9-to-5 for a 5-to-9: The One-Night Bikepacking Escape

No vacation days? No problem. Turn your 9-to-5 into a 5-to-9 with a one-night bikepacking escape that starts at your doorstep and ends before your morning meeting.

Bikepacking is booming. It feels like everyone wants to ride higher, go farther, and disappear into the wilderness for weeks at a time. But who actually has the time for that? I went looking for adventure somewhere between everyday life and a packed calendar, and I found it right on my doorstep. Social media feeds are full of epic expeditions to the far side of the world. The reality often looks very different. Packed schedules and too few days off dictate our everyday lives. So instead of sitting in rush-hour traffic or collapsing onto the sofa in frustration, I decided to flip the whole thing on its head. 9-to-5 becomes 5-to-9. It's 5 pm and I close the laptop. Today's goal: a one-night escape from the daily grind. Beyond that, there's no plan, just one deadline โ€” I need to be back in my meeting on time tomorrow morning. ### Packing Light (Sort Of) Normally, I'm firmly in the camp that stuffs the camper to the roof with gear for a weekend at the bike park and still somehow turns up massively overloaded. Packing only the essentials and traveling light really isn't my strong suit. This time, though, my cross-country bike will have to do, and I'm only taking what fits on the handlebars, the bike, or directly on my body. I pack as best I can and head off. There isn't much room for luggage on my Lauf Elja, but it'll have to be enough for one night. ### Exploring Your Own Backyard After just a few miles, I leave my usual post-work routes behind. With no pressure at all, I simply keep pedaling. There's no rush, and no need to be home before dark. I drift away from the familiar trails, past wide-open fields and lush green pastures where cows graze, bells clinking at their necks. The air smells of freshly cut grass, and with every pedal stroke, the stress of the office falls a little further behind. It's amazing how unfamiliar โ€” how full of adventure โ€” home can feel when you simply turn left where you'd usually go right. Anyone can discover new places close to home if they simply turn left instead of right for a change. ### A Thousand-Star Hotel With "improvisation is everything" as my motto, I have no plan and, of course, no dinner with me either. As luck would have it, I roll past a farm with a vending machine stocked with fresh local produce. Perfect! I grab some sausages and pretzels for a first bite to eat. But the best part of the stop is meeting the farmer himself, who has just climbed down from his tractor. We get chatting, I tell him about my 5-to-9 idea, and he smiles. Without any fuss, he offers to let me spend the night in his freshly mown meadow over by the edge of the woods. Thanks to the well-stocked farm vending machine, dinner is sorted. And thanks to the friendly farmer, I've got somewhere to sleep for the night too. ### Gravel, Singletrack, and a Grin That Won't Quit With a guaranteed place to sleep, I make the most of the remaining daylight and clock up a few more miles. Leaving civilization behind once again, I head onto quiet gravel roads and even stumble across a few singletrack trails along the way. Until now, I'd always thought the real fun was reserved for enduro trails at the bike park, but the Lauf Elja XC bike proves otherwise, getting both the adrenaline and the grin factor up. But the sun is slowly disappearing, and dusk casts the foothills in a cool blue glow. Time to head back to camp. Setting up is surprisingly straightforward, and before long I've checked into my thousand-star hotel at the edge of the woods in record time. Roll out the sleeping mat, inflate it, climb into the sleeping bag. Done. There's no Wi-Fi and barely any signal, so the urge to mindlessly scroll disappears fast. Instead, I lie there listening to the wind in the trees and the distant clink of cowbells. No notifications, no deadlines, just quiet. It's the kind of reset you can't buy โ€” and it costs nothing but a single evening. > The best adventures don't always require a plane ticket. Sometimes they're waiting at the end of your street, just past the point where you'd normally turn around. ### Why the 5-to-9 Escape Works - **It fits your calendar.** One evening, one night, back by morning. No vacation days required. - **It builds real skills.** You learn to pack light, navigate, and improvise โ€” all things that pay off on bigger trips. - **It's nearly free.** No lift tickets, no hotel bills. Just fuel for your legs and maybe a few dollars at a farm stand. - **It resets your head.** A night under open skies does more for your stress levels than a whole weekend on the couch. The next morning, I pack up before sunrise and roll back toward town. Coffee is brewing by the time I sit down at my desk, and nobody at work has any idea where I've been. That's the quiet magic of the 5-to-9 adventure. You don't need weeks off or a passport. You just need to close the laptop, load the bike, and turn left.
