What If You Turned 9-to-5 Into 5-to-9? One Night Changed Everything

No time for a week-long bikepacking trip? Try the 5-to-9 escape instead. One night, one bike, and a backyard full of adventure waiting right outside your door.

Bikepacking is booming. It feels like everyone wants to go higher, further, and preferably disappear into the wilderness for weeks at a time. But who actually has the time for that? I went looking for adventure between everyday life and a packed calendar, and found it right on my doorstep. Social media feeds are full of epic expeditions to the far side of the world. The reality often looks very different. Packed schedules and too few days off dictate our everyday lives. So instead of throwing myself into rush-hour traffic or collapsing onto the sofa in frustration, I decided to flip the whole thing on its head. 9-to-5 becomes 5-to-9. It's 5 pm and I close the laptop. Today's goal: a one-night escape from the daily grind. Beyond that, there's no plan, just one deadline. I need to be back in my meeting on time tomorrow morning. ### Packing Light Is Harder Than It Sounds Normally, I'm firmly in the camp that stuffs the camper to the roof with gear for a weekend at the bike park and still somehow turns up massively overloaded. Packing only the essentials and traveling light really isn't my strong suit. This time, though, my cross-country bike will have to do. I'm only taking what fits on the handlebars, the bike, or directly on my body. There isn't much room for luggage on my Lauf Elja, but it'll have to be enough for one night. I pack the bike as best I can and head off. ### Exploring Your Own Backyard After just a few miles, I leave my usual post-work routes behind. With no pressure at all, I simply keep pedaling. There's no rush, and no need to be home before dark. I drift away from the familiar trails, past wide-open fields and lush green pastures where cows graze, bells clinking at their necks. The air smells of freshly cut grass, and with every pedal stroke, the stress of the office falls a little further behind. It's amazing how unfamiliar, how full of adventure, home can feel when you simply turn left where you'd usually go right. Anyone can discover new places close to home if they simply turn left instead of right for a change. ### A Thousand-Star Hotel With "improvisation is everything" as my motto, I have no plan and, of course, no dinner with me either. As luck would have it, I roll past a farm with a vending machine stocked with fresh local produce. Perfect! I grab some pepper sausages and pretzels for a first bite to eat. But the best part of the stop is meeting the farmer himself, who has just climbed down from his tractor. We get chatting, I tell him about my 5-to-9 idea, and he smiles. Without any fuss, he offers to let me spend the night in his freshly mown meadow over by the edge of the woods. With a guaranteed place to sleep, I make the most of the remaining daylight and clock up a few more miles. Leaving civilization behind once again, I head onto quiet gravel roads and even stumble across a few singletrack trails along the way. Until now, I'd always thought the real fun was reserved for enduro trails at the bike park, but the Lauf Elja XC bike proves otherwise, getting both the adrenaline and the grin factor up. > "The best adventures don't require a plane ticket. Sometimes they just require you to close your laptop and ride the other direction." But the sun is slowly disappearing, and dusk casts the foothills in a cool blue glow. Time to head back to camp. Setting up is surprisingly straightforward. Roll out the sleeping mat, inflate it, climb into the sleeping bag. Done. There's no Wi-Fi and barely any signal, so the urge to mindlessly scroll through my phone fades fast. Instead, I lie there listening to the wind in the trees and the distant clink of cowbells. No notifications, no deadlines, just quiet. ### Why the 5-to-9 Escape Works Here's what I learned from one night out: - You don't need weeks off to feel like you've traveled somewhere new. - Packing light forces you to focus on what actually matters. - Strangers are more generous than you'd expect when you share your story. - A single night outdoors can reset your whole week. - Your own backyard is more adventurous than you think. The next morning, I pack up, ride home, shower, and slide into my 9 am meeting right on time. Nobody at work even knew I'd been gone. But I did. And that's the whole point. You don't have to quit your job to find adventure. Sometimes you just have to swap the hours around.
